Bio
Anna Tavakkoli, M.D., M.Sc., is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases and Director of Bariatric Endoscopy at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She also holds a dual appointment in the Department of Population and Data Sciences at UT Southwestern.
Originally from Lansing, Michigan, Dr. Tavakkoli earned her medical degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville. She then earned a master's degree in health and healthcare delivery at the University of Michigan. She completed internal medicine residency training at Columbia University. She then completed advanced training through fellowships in gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at the University of Michigan.
Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in gastroenterology, Dr. Tavakkoli joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2018.
Dr. Tavakkoli’s clinical interests include benign and malignant pancreaticobiliary diseases, endoscopic suturing, and endoscopic bariatric therapies. Her clinical expertise includes endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), transoral outlet reduction (TORe) for weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, and revisional endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty after sleeve gastrectomy.
Dr. Tavakkoli is also active in clinical research with a focus on disparities in gastrointestinal malignancies, quality improvement of ERCP, and outcomes after ESG and TORe.
She is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, where she also serves as a committee member. In addition, she is an ad-hoc reviewer for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and VideoGIE.
