Bio
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
Fellowship Trained in Sports Medicine
Paul Whatley, M.D., graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where he was awarded the Paul Boller Award for Most Outstanding Surgeon.
He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee/Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tenn., the world's first orthopedic surgery residency program. He went on to complete fellowship training in sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Ga., one of the premier sports medicine clinics in the country and served as a team physician for the NCAA Division II football national champions, Valdosta State University.
Whatley is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, Texas Medical Association, Denton County Medical Society, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Having spent much of his career focused on orthopedic sports medicine and treating athletic-related injuries, he brings a strong commitment to helping his patients through customized ACL reconstruction techniques and arthroscopic procedures for rotator cuff injuries. He treats all shoulder conditions, from those requiring rehabilitation, to arthroscopy, to traditional and reverse total shoulder replacements. He sees all orthopedic issues and routinely takes general orthopedic surgery calls and manages traumatic injuries to both the upper and lower extremities, including hip, femur, and ankle injuries in addition to upper extremity conditions.
In 2007, this commitment to serving the unique needs of every patient landed Whatley on a team of orthopedic surgeons tasked with treating a 600-pound polar bear with a femur fracture. The team successfully inserted two plates in the bear's leg to get her back up and moving at the Memphis Zoo.
When not caring for patients, you will find Whatley restoring a classic automobile or on hand at Texas Woman's University or Aubrey High School, where he serves as team physician.
