Bio
Dr. Moritz Wyler von Ballmoos has served as a fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon since 2017, but his research and teaching efforts in the fields of cardiovascular and lung health were recognized beginning a decade earlier. His long-standing passion for studying the health and disease states of the human cardiovascular system includes research into the development of conditions such as atherosclerosis. He has also prioritized the investigation of lifestyle risk factors, imaging technology, and procedures in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, with a particular interest in structural heart disease and transcatheter therapies.
Dr. Wyler von Ballmoos has been involved in multiple randomized clinical trials in various capacities, and currently serves as an investigator or principal investigator for 25 national or international device trials. He maintains research collaborations with investigators at various institutions, including the Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, University of Würzburg in Germany, Duke Clinical Research Institute, the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Mount Sinai Hospital New York and Montreal Heart Institute in Canada.
Dr. Wyler von Ballmoos is board-certified in thoracic surgery. He earned his medical degree at the University of Bern in Switzerland and completed his cardiovascular and thoracic surgery residency at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He went on to complete his fellowship training in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Dr. Wyler von Ballmoos also holds a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass. He was instrumental in creating a minimally invasive cardiac surgery and structural heart advanced fellowship curriculum for Houston Methodist Hospital and the DeBakey Institute for Cardiovascular Education & Training in Houston, Texas. He also developed the robotic-assisted cardiac and vascular surgery program in use by the Houston Methodist Hospital system since 2019.
Dr. Wyler von Ballmoos is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association. He is also a member of the Heart Valve Society and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
